Offshore Accounts for UAE Expats: What They Are (and Aren't) For

BySameer Alam, MBA· Vice President · NEBA Private Clients

An offshore account is a legitimate tool for internationally mobile families — not a secret or a tax dodge. Here's what it genuinely does, and what to watch for.

'Offshore' still carries an unfortunate whiff of secrecy. In reality, for expatriates who move between countries and hold assets in several currencies, a properly-run offshore account is a practical, fully-transparent tool — and in an era of global information sharing, secrecy is not what it offers.

What does an offshore account actually do?

  • Holds and moves money in multiple currencies without repeatedly repatriating it
  • Provides continuity as you move between countries, rather than opening and closing local accounts
  • Sits in a stable, well-regulated jurisdiction independent of any single country
  • Acts as a base for internationally-portable investments and structures

Is it legal and tax-free?

Holding an offshore account is entirely legal. What matters is that it is declared where you are required to declare it — most jurisdictions now exchange account information automatically. 'Offshore' can be tax-efficient because of where and how assets are held, but it is not a way to hide income, and any adviser who implies otherwise should be avoided.

What should you watch for?

Fees, currency spreads, minimum balances and — above all — what you actually hold inside. Many expats are placed into high-charging products attached to an offshore account. The account is a tool; the value is in using it as part of a transparent, well-structured plan. This is general information, not advice.
